5 Things to Know Before Your Hair & Makeup Trial

I remember as soon as I got engaged I wanted to do two things right away: 1. Find my dream dress. 2. Set up an appointment to get my hair and make up trials- who doesn’t love a good pampering? At the time, I wasn’t working my dream job as a wedding planner and had much to learn.. but the hard way. I ended up getting distracted on all the other wedding details, I completely forgot to book appointments for hair and make up trials.

I ended up booking an appointment with my hair stylists just two weeks before my wedding day. Did I like the style she did? Sure didn’t. Was I stressing about my hair from that day until the wedding day? I sure was. We communicated throughout the next two weeks on how terrible the trial went and other hair style options. The morning of the big day, she tried something new- and to our relief, it was perfect!!

Needless to say, I learned my lesson, but I also know so much more now that I am in this wonderful field of wedding planning. Here at A True Love Story, we want to make sure your whole wedding planning experience is as stress free and as memorable as possible.

Here are a 5 helpful tips for you before your hair and make up trial:

  1. Schedule an appointment (or two) three months out from your wedding day. Having appointments booked months before your big day will ensure you have time to properly test out your dream look and make any changes if necessary. While most people agree you really only need to book one run-through, you can schedule more if you'd like. For example, if you're torn between two looks or want to try something a little different the second time around, an extra appointment might help you feel more confident for the wedding day.

  2. Create an inspiration board of beauty looks you like to share with your stylist(s) ahead of time. Whatever looks you pick, communicating what you like most about them to your stylist will help them understand your preferences. Expert stylists say to label the looks for your stylist. For example, write 'These bangs are everything,' 'This part is on point,' or 'Swooning over this color.'"

  3. Schedule your wedding make up trial and wedding hair trial together or the same day. Sometimes the hair style you chose doesn’t mesh well with the make up style that you thought you wanted. This gives you the opportunity to see how it all goes together.

  4. Bring your make up bag- especially if you have sensitive skin. If there's a foundation that sits on your skin perfectly or a certain product you wear every single day, bring it to your hair and makeup trial. Your stylist may not use them, but it shares with them products that work well with your skin. Even if the artist has their own products, which most do, it's important for you to feel comfortable with your makeup so that you can enjoy the day.

  5. Bring hair accessories you plan to wear the day of. Items such as your veil, hand bands, clips, etc. It’s best to get these items beforehand so you have them to experiment with during your hair and make up trials- that way you get to see exactly what you’ll look like (minus your gorgeous dress) for your special day!
