3 Things to Remember When Shopping for a Wedding Dress

WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING!!!!!!

When I got engaged back in February of 2020, I was so excited to marry the love of my life, and finally be able to try on wedding dresses! I know you probably feel or felt the same way. Shopping for your dream dress is so much fun, but can get overwhelming with all the beautiful dresses to choose from. My situation was unique, because I saw my perfect dress in the window of Thornbury Brides in New Bern, NC, and it ended up being the one! Sometimes you can have a vision in your head of the perfect dress for you, and your dress ends up being completely opposite of what you were thinking. That is totally okay, and happens all the time. Before booking your appointment to go dress shopping I want you to remember 3 things.

1) Select a dress that you feel beautiful in.

I know you are probably thinking, yeah that is a given, I want to feel beautiful in my wedding dress. But… there are different factors that play into how you feel beautiful in your dress. Do you feel comfortable in it? Are you able to walk, sit, and dance in the dress? Does the dress compliment your best features? Is it a dress you love, or your group’s favorite? Does the dress photograph well? So many things factor into how you feel in your wedding dress. That is why it is good to keep an open mind and try on a few different styles of dresses to know which one you feel the best in. Even though I fell in love with my dress that was displayed in the window of the store, I still tried on about 5 different styles of dresses to make sure that was the one for me. I also had my mom take pictures of me in the dress to make sure I liked how it looked in pictures as well.

2) Keep your venue and time of year in mind.

Not only do you want to feel beautiful in your dress, you also want to keep your venue and time of year in mind. If you are getting married on the beach, you probably don’t what to have a dress with a long train dragging in the sand while you are walking down the aisle. If you are eloping, you want to make sure your dress will travel well on a plane without getting wrinkled and taking up too much room.

If you are getting married on the beach in the summer, you probably wouldn't want a long sleeve dress, because it will be too hot. Same consideration goes for winter months, you probably would want a long sleeve dress or warm shawl to keep you warm.

3) Adding accessories can change the whole look of the dress.

Don’t forget about what accessories you will be wearing or want to add to your dress. Your accessories can add an extra special touch to your dress and create a whole different look. If you have a special necklace you will be wearing on your wedding day, you will want to make sure it goes well with your dress. If you want to wear a veil that has been in your family for generations, make sure you bring it to your appointment. That way you can try on the veil with your dress to make sure they complement each other well. You can add a bling belt to your dress, a lace overlay top, a lace jacket, and the list goes on. Adding accessories are also a great way for getting the look you want while staying within your budget.

Before your wedding dress appointment, do some research on the style of dresses you would like to try on, know your budget, and bring the accessories you want to wear with you.
